Role of Epigenetic Diet on Early Menopause in Women of Karachi, Pakistan

Abstract

Background: Diet may impact gene expression, highlighting the link between dietary intake and epigenetic activity throughout one's lifetime. This study has been performed to evaluate the role of epigenetic diet in causing early menopause in women.

Methods: A case-controlled study conducted from July 2022 to October 2023 on diagnosed Menopausal women was conducted. A convenient sampling technique was used, and 200 women from 8 hospitals of Karachi diagnosed with early menopause were selected. Out of 200, 140 have been married women (70%) and 60 unmarried women (30%). 50 healthy controls (50% each married & unmarried) were selected within age range 25-40years. Data was compiled on a self-designed questionnaire and blood samples were analyzed for FSH, LH, Estrogen, Calcium, and Vitamin D levels. SPSS has been used for statistical analysis.

Results: The mean age of early menopausal women has been 30 years in comparison to 27 years of control. 36% of cases were unaware of the influence of epigenetics on early menopause. 95% of cases have been daily users of fast food, 42% of soft drinks, and 79% of excessive use of chicken. Menstrual cycles of 71% of cases have been irregular and blood flow of 53% has been scanty. 83% of cases reported symptoms of dysmenorrhea. The level of FSH, and LH has been high and estrogen was found to be significantly lower than the control. Calcium has been normal but vitamin D has been significantly low.

Conclusion: A significant association has been found between dietary factors and early menopausal women. Early menopause due to epigenetics can lead to further complications.
