Background of the study: Limbs pattern facilitation is a procedure of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation that can be used to improve distant weak muscles. A case report was aimed to verify the effects of limb pattern facilitation to improve low back pain and the associated factors such as lumbar multifidus activity, range of movement and disability in a patient with chronic low back pain.
Methodology: A 33-year-old male was diagnosed with nonspecific chronic low back pain and was recruited from Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS). Pain, disability, multifidus activity and range of motion were assessed at the baseline and after 12 sessions of exercises through the visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), surface electromyography and Modified Modified Schober's test (MMST) respectively.
Results: This case report showed positive effects of limb pattern facilitation in terms of pain and associated factors such as lumbar multifidus activity, range of motion and disability in a patient with chronic low back pain.
Conclusion: Positive effects of limb pattern facilitation in a patient with CLBP has been seen. It can be suggested that the pattern exercises of upper and lower limbs have a place to benefit LBP by spreading muscle tone to trunk muscles leading to improved LMM motor control.
