Background: Prediabetes affects approximately 374 million people worldwide, with a global prevalence of 7.5% among adults aged 20-79 years. Epidemiological studies indicate a strong association between elevated serum uric acid (SUA) and dyslipidemia in prediabetic individuals, with approximately 43.7% of prediabetic patients exhibiting hyperuricemia. Hence the current study is designed to determine correlation between SUA and lipid profiles in prediabetic individuals.
Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out from January 2024 to May 2024 at the Department of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, OMI Hospital. A sample of 150 participant was recruited via simple random sampling technique based on the selection criteria. Target population included adults 30-65 years old diagnosed with prediabetes according to American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2023. The data analysis was performed on SPSS version 26, while p<0.05 was taken as statistically significant.
Results: The mean age was 48.2±7.9 years. Hyperuricemia was present in 32.7% of the study population, with a higher prevalence among males (36.4%) compared to females (29.8%), although this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.083). The correlations with total cholesterol (r=0.163, p=0.047) and LDL-C (r=0.172, p=0.036) were weaker but statistically significant.
Conclusion: The findings propose that SUA might show a significant part in the lipid metabolism of prediabetic individuals and could potentially serve as a valuable biomarker for identifying those at higher risk of dyslipidemia and its associated cardiovascular complications.
